On Saturday, the Under 18s got off to a great start, defeating Zone 5 on all 3 rinks in the first game. This was a great achievement considering 3 players were representing Zone 12 for the first time and 3 others had represented only once previously. The second game, the experienced Zone 16 proved two strong on all 3 rinks. All 3 of their skips were playing their last year, while all our players are eligible again next year. In game 3, Zone 15 defeated us in the playoff for second spot 2 rinks to 1, although our overall combined score would have held up if there was a master board. Special mention was made by several parents of how the three experienced players, Ryan Klem, Brendan Ford and Jason English did a great job of encouraging and guiding the newer recruits to the team.
On Sunday, the Under 25s also began well, defeating all 3 rinks from Zone 10 by healthy margins. The second game against the local Illawarra team was the highlight of the day, with all three rinks keenly contested. Our pairs lost by two, our triples won by two and our fours dropped 5 shots on the last end to have a draw. This would have resulted in a tied master board.
Results in the first two games meant that all four teams were still possible winners when the afternoon round started. Our girls’ triples team and our fours team both trailed towards the end of their games whilst the pairs combination of Zac Corr-Johnson and Tom Bowman were untroubled throughout. All three rinks were eventually victorious, and we were convincing winners of the 2022 Under 25s Metro Cup.
Gray Hemington and Zac Corr-Johnson skipped all three games with confidence. Our late inclusions of Dawn Hayman and Briana Smith added experience to our playing and coaching depth. All other players showed their adaptability by playing different formats throughout the day while still displaying great teamwork. Kaylah Courtin, Ben Harvey and Dawn Hayman experienced success in their last year in Under 25s, while all other players are ready to back up next year when we are due to host the competition.
